Elam was a bounty hunter. After losing his arm due to a gunfight with Tuco Ramirez, he tracked down Tuco to an old hotel. As Elam gloated about having finally caught Tuco, having him cornered in a bathtub, Tuco shot him to death with a gun he had hidden inside the tub with him.
